13-hour long power outage in Sri Lanka as nation runs out of diesel

Private buses owners said they will not be able to operate buses from Thursday

Sri Lanka, on Thursday, faced 13-hour long power cut because of scarcity of diesel for generators. The non-availability of diesel also led to crippling of transport, in a country that is facing its worst economic crisis.

According to media reports, the island nation faced diesel shortage across cities, forcing many motorists to abandon their vehicles in long queues.

Ceylon Electricity Board chairman M. M. C. Ferdinando told reporters that the new supplies will arrive in two days and the length of power cuts can be shortened.

The power cuts also affected mobile phone services as the stand-by generators of mobile operators too ran out of diesel.

Transport Minister Dilum Amunugama said they have been forced to siphon off fuel from buses that are in garages for repairs and use that diesel to operate serviceable vehicles.

Owners of private buses said they will not be able to operate buses from Thursday evening if they do not get diesel.

Petrol too is in short supply in the country.
