A plane carrying skydivers crashed Sunday shortly after takeoff in central Russia, killing 16 of the 22 people aboard.

The L-410, a Czech-made twin-engine turboprop, crashed near the town of Menzelinsk, about 960 kilometres (600 miles) east of Moscow.

The Emergencies Ministry said six people were extracted from the wreckage alive, while 16 were taken out “without signs of life”. The cause of the crash was not immediately determined.

Images of the wreckage show the aircraft broken in half with a severely dented nose.

According to Tatarstan head Rustam Minnikhanov, the pilots had reported an engine failure and requested an emergency landing shortly after takeoff. The plane tried to avoid a nearby residential area when selecting a site to land but its altitude “didn’t allow it”. It hit a parked van with its wing and turned over.

All the survivors were sitting in the back of the plane, TASS reported club instructor Oleg Shiporov as saying.
