US Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick died late on Thursday after suffering injuries when supporters of President Donald Trump stormed at the Capitol Hill building on Wednesday. This brings the total number of dead from the riot to five.

“Officer Sicknick was responding to the riots…and was injured while physically engaging with protesters,” the police said in a statement.

Sicknick, who joined Capitol Police in July 2008, most recently served in the department's First Responders Unit. After engaging with the rioters, he returned to his division office, where he collapsed. He was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

President Trump had initially praised his supporters, who caused riots, demanding for election results to be overturned. After several of his Republican loyalists, including Mike Pence turned the tide and condemned the rioters, Trump too, condemned the violence, saying the rioters had defiled the seat of American democracy and must be held accountable.

In the fallout from the chaos on Wednesday, Former White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, who now serves as special envoy to Northern Ireland resigned. He joins a slew of others at the White House, who quit their positions including Stephanie Grisham, chief of staff for First Lady Melania Trump; Sarah Matthews, White House Deputy Press Secretary and Anna Cristina “Rickie” Niceta Lloyd, White House Social Secretary.

US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos too, resigned on Thursday.
