Iraqi judge issues arrest warrant against Donald Trump

The warrant was issued in connection with killing of an Iraqi parliamentary leader

An Iraqi judge issued an arrest warrant for US President Donald Trump in connection with killing an Iraqi paramilitary leader along with IRGC chief Qassem Soleimani. The warrant was issued by a judge in a Baghdad investigative court tasked with probing the killing Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the Iraqi deputy head of the Iran-backed Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces was killed in a drone attack carried out by the US. 

According to a statement by the Supreme Judicial Council, the decision to issue the warrant “was made after the judge recorded the statements of the claimants from the family of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.”  The investigative procedures continue, the court said.  A Shia paramilitary force, the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) is made of former militias with close ties to Iran. Shortly after the attack, Trump described it as “two for the price of one.” Trump will be prosecuted after his term ends, said Tehran attorney general Ali Alqasi Mehr. 

The killings drew ire of Shiite lawmakers, who passed a non-binding resolution to pressure the government into ousting foreign troops forms he country. It has also strained US-Iraq and US-Iran relations. 

Iran-backed groups, soon after the attack, sent a volley of missiles targeted at bases of American troops in Iraq. This has led to US threatening to shutter its diplomatic mission in Baghdad.
