French President Emmanuel Macron has tested positive for COVID-19 after exhibiting symptoms and will self-isolate for a week, with all scheduled foreign trips in that period cancelled, his office has said.

"The president of the Republic has been diagnosed positive for Covid-19 today," the presidential palace said in a statement.

"This diagnosis was made following an PCR test performed at the onset of the first symptoms," the statement said. Macron's symptoms were not given out.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex, who had been in contact with Macron, will also be self-isolating.

France has had over 2.4 million cases of COVID-19 since the first case was identified in Bordeaux in January. A second and record wave of infections took place in October prompting the country to enter a second round of national lockdowns.

While incumbent several world leaders have contracted COVID-19 so far, only one has died from the disease: Eswatini Prime Minister Ambrose Dlamini on December 14 became the first world leader to die after contracting COVID-19.

Other leaders who contracted COVID-19 include Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, Bolivian interim President Jeanine Anez, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, Guibea-Bisea Prime Minister Nuno Gomes Nabiam, Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei, Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernandez, Kosovan Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti, Moldovan Prime Minister Ion Chicu, Polish President Andrzej Duda, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and US President Donald Trump.
