US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday asserted that there will be a smooth transition to a second Trump Administration, indicating that he believes Donald Trump has won the November 3 presidential elections. "There will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration. We are ready. The world is watching what's taking place here. We're going to count all the votes...," Pompeo said.
He was responding to questions from reporters whether his department was preparing to engage with the Biden transition team and if not at what point does it delay or hamper a smooth transition or pose a risk to national security.
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has been declared the winner of the elections by major media networks, as is the tradition in the United States. President-elect Biden has quickly moved on to the transition phase.
Pompeo said that the world should have every confidence that the transition necessary to make sure that the State Department is functional today, successful today, and successful with the president who's in office on January 20th a minute after noon will also be successful.
His statement comes immediately after US President Donald Trump insisted that he will "win" the November 3 presidential election once the final votes are tallied and certified.
The Trump campaign and his Republican Party have filed multiple lawsuits in several states including Pennsylvania, which has 20 electoral college votes, Georgia (16), Michigan (16), Nevada (six), demanding to recount votes in Wisconsin which has 10 electoral college votes. The lawsuits range from local courts up to the United States Supreme Court.
Denied by state officials and Democratic Party, the Trump campaign and the Republican Party have levelled accusation of serious voter fraud and electoral malpractices.
