Taliban call on Biden to stick to US troop withdrawal deal

Several tough-to-crack issues lie ahead of Joe Biden when he takes over as President from Donald Trump. Donald Trump's deal with the Taliban to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan surely tops the list. While US and Afghan lawmakers are urging Biden to reconsider Trump's deal and refrain from pulling out US troops from Afghanistan.

The Taliban on Tuesday called on the incoming administration of US President-elect Joe Biden to stick to the February agreement to withdraw US Troops.

Whilst holding a series of peace talks with the Taliban, the US administration has been gradually pulling out troops from Afghanistan and envisages the withdrawal to be complete by May. The US pulling out troops in its entirety is subject to certain guarantees on counter-terrorism from the Taliban.

"The Islamic Emirate would like to stress to the new American president-elect and future administration that implementation of the agreement is the most reasonable and effective tool for ending the conflict between both our countries," the militant group said in a statement, its first substantive comment post results of the United States presidential election were announced.

Trump, in October, had tweeted that he will have the troops home by Christmas.

Violence in the region had been increasing, with the Taliban attacking provincial capitals, in some case prompting United States airstrikes. Further talks with Qatar has in the meantime been delayed.
