It's traditionally one of the first towns to announce results for the US presidential election—and the winner is Joe Biden.

The tiny unincorporated community of Dixville Notch in New Hampshire has a population of just 12, of which five are eligible to vote. All five of these votes have gone to the Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

Located just near the border with Canada, the village's voters usually cast their votes together shortly after midnight. As part of their voting tradition, they gather in the 'Ballot Room' at the Balsams Resort and vote together—making use of a state law that allows precincts to close if all the votes have been cast.

So, while New Hampshire polling stations are usually open between sunrise and evening, Dixville Notch residents make use of the opportunity to be among the first to vote and declare results in the US elections.

While this tradition makes them a favourite for news organisations looking for early leads on the election trends, their voting patterns have not always been predictive of national results. In 2016, they voted for Hillary Clinton—but of course, Donald Trump went on to take the presidency. That year, two votes had gone for Donald Trump.

The state of New Hampshire contributes 4 electoral college votes. The successful presidential nominee will need to cross the 270 mark to win the election.
