Vice President Mike Pence and second lady Karen Pence tested negative for COVID-19 Friday morning, hours after President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were diagnosed with the coronavirus.

Spokesman Devin O'Malley says Pence remains in good health and wishes the Trumps well in their recovery. Pence is tested every day for the virus, O'Malley confirmed.

The news comes amid fears over Trump's health. Given his age, Trump is in the most vulnerable category for the disease. In addition, pre-existing conditions such as clinical obesity add to his vulnerability—raising the prospect of Pence becoming President in the event that Trump is medically incapable of discharging his duties.

As per the 25th Amendment, the Vice President would be made President temporarily in such a scenario. Should the President die while in office, Pence will serve as Vice President until the coming election. However, should the Vice President also be incapacitated, the next in order of succession would be the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi.

Trump’s physician has assured the public that the President will continue carrying out his duties. As of now, he remains well, according to Dr. Sean Conley.

"The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch, and I appreciate the support provided by some of our country's greatest medical professionals and institutions," Conley said.

Trump joins Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the list of world leaders who have contracted COVID-19. Johnson, notably, was placed in the ICU after contracting the illness and in his words said he nearly lost his life to the virus. Johnson was among the world leaders who wished Trump a “speedy recovery” on Friday after the news broke.
