Iranian woman who removed headscarf sentenced to year in prison

The 'Girl of Enghelab Street,' Vida Mohaved was called, the Iranian woman who removed her headscarf in public in a protest. Vida Mohaved, has been sentenced to one year in prison after she was found guilty of encouraging public corruption, said her lawyer Payam Derefshan.

Derefshan also said that the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has pardoned her.

The lawyer for an Iranian woman who removed her obligatory Islamic headscarf in a public protest says she has been sentenced to one year in prison but pardoned by the supreme leader.

Mohaved was arrested in November and and sentenced in March. Moahved's release papers are underway, the lawyers added.

Authorities detained 29 women on similar charges the following year.

Women removing their headscarf in public have usually been sentenced to two months or less and fined $25. According to Iranian law post the Islamic Revolution of 1979, all women, Iranian or foreign, Muslim or non-Muslim, must be fully veiled in public at all times.
