US President Donald Trump has built a reputation for tweets that have been hard-hitting and occasionally flowing with self-praise.

On Wednesday, Trump referred to himself as “a man considered by many to be the president with the most successful first two years in history”.

Trump was tweeting in appreciation of House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who opposed demands to impeach him. In a series of tweets, Trump said, “How do you impeach a man who is considered by many to be the President with the most successful first two years in history, especially when he has done nothing wrong and impeachment is for “high crimes and misdemeanors”?

While the Democrats, who seized control of the House of Representatives in midterm elections in November last year, had initiated investigations into irregularities involving Trump, the party has been hesitant in talking of an impeachment bid.

Interestingly, during the 2018 midterm elections in November, Trump had tweeted about the “tremendous success” of the Republicans in boosting their hold over the Senate. Trump referred to comments by economist Ben Stein, who had praised the “Trump magic”.

Trump tweeted about Stein's comments, “There’s only been 5 times in the last 105 years that an incumbent President has won seats in the Senate in the off year election. Mr. Trump has magic about him. This guy has magic coming out of his ears. He is an astonishing vote getter & campaigner. The Republicans are unbelievably lucky to have him and I’m just awed at how well they’ve done. It’s all the Trump magic—Trump is the magic man. Incredible, he’s got the entire media against him, attacking him every day, and he pulls out these enormous wins.”

Despite being accused of polarising the US political system, Trump has been appreciated for presiding over economic growth that has seen a rise in employment figures. His hard-line stance on foreign tariffs and outsourcing of jobs has helped Trump retain support among sections of the US working class.
