Thirty injured as turbulence hits Turkish Airlines flight to New York

30 passengers were injured as severe turbulence hit a Turkish Airlines plane bound to New York from Istanbul.

The injured were taken from New York's John F Kennedy International Airport to local hospitals, mainly for treatment of bumps, cuts and bruises. the flight encountered bumpy air about 40 miles north of Boston in course of the 10 and half hour flight, according to a report by one of the pilots of the Boeing 777. The jet had 326 passengers and 21 crew on board, of which one attended suffered a broken leg

Airport operations were not disrupted as a result of the incident. Flying over the turbulent area was not an option according to a controller.

Another plane, one operated by Canada's Air Transat made an emergency landing at another New York area airport — in Newark, New Jersey — after smoke was detected in the cargo hold.

The Boeing 737-800 had 189 passengers on board and was travelling from Montreal to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. No one was injured, a spokeswoman for Air Transat said.
