A tsunami warning was issued for parts of the Philippines and Indonesia after an earthquake of 6.9 magnitude struck off the coast of the Philippine island of Mindanao on Saturday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey announced “hazardous tsunami” waves were possible within 300km of the epicentre of the quake, which struck around 193km east of the city of General Santos.

The USGS warned tsunami waves with height less than 0.3 metres could hit parts of Indonesia, Philippines and Palau. Authorities warned of tsunami waves hitting the Indonesian islands of Geme and Tabukan Tengah and Davao in the Philippines.

A week ago, the eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano in Indonesia triggered a landslide that resulted in a tsunami hitting parts of Java and Sumatra, killing nearly 500 people and injuring over 1,500 others.
