The second One-Day International (ODI) between India and New Zealand, held at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday, was called off due to rain. The match had been crucial to India after the host nation won the first in the three-match series.

New Zealand had earlier won the toss and skipper Kane Williamson had elected to bowl against India. However, when India was 22 for no loss in 4.5 overs, showers first interrupted the match. Shubhman Gill was opening (19) with skipper Shikhar Dhawan (2) when the skies opened up.

Though the play resumed later after a four-hour rain delay, the match was reduced to 29-overs-a-side. However, the showers once again halted the game when India's score was 89/1 in the 13th over. Suryakumar Yadav, who came in after Dhawan lost his wicket, built the score with Gill. Yadav was 34 not out and Gill was 45 not out when the abandonment was announced.

New Zealand, who now leads the series with 0-1, had won the first ODI in Auckland by seven wickets, thanks to Tom Latham's 145 not out off 104 balls. Kiwis chased a target of 307 runs against India in the first ODI.

The final match of the series will be played on Wednesday in Christchurch.

Meanwhile, Indian skipper Shikhar Dhawan said the team was looking forward to the third game. "I was quite surprised with the surface, I thought it would be seaming quite a bit, but it wasn’t as much as the last match. It was good to bat on and to see Shubman perform this way was very encouraging. We wanted the sixth bowler to come in, so Sanju Samson missed out and Hooda came in. And Chahar was picked because he can swing the ball really well," he was quoted by The Times Of India.
