Barcelona player Philippe Coutinho underwent a surgery on his knee successfully following an injury he sustained during their La Liga match against Eibar in December last year.

According to the club’s website, the midfielder had the surgery on a meniscal cyst in his left knee and he will not be available for selection as he recovers.

“… his recovery will dictate his return to action,” the website said.

Barcelona’s official Twitter account also posted updates on the midfielder.

“Phil Coutinho had a meniscal cyst in his left knee successfully operated on by Dr Rodrigo Lasmar, under the supervision of the club's medical services team. Coutinho is out and his recovery will determine his availability,” the tweet read.

Coutinho was sidelined for three months after his first operation in January and will now need extra recovery time, Goal.com reported.

The Brazilian came on in the second half of the game against Eibar, and limped off the ground during stoppage time as Barcelona finished the match 1-1 after Ousmane Dembele scored the equalizer in the 67th minute.

Coutinho has played only 14 games this season in all competitions scoring just three goals. Following the surgery, the 28-year-old is likely to miss the rest of the campaign. He might also miss Brazil’s Copa America clash with Venezuela on June 14.

In La Liga, Barcelona are second in the standings with 65 points, just one behind Atletico Madrid.
