Badminton star Kento Momota has tested positive for COVID-19 and his results have forced Japan to withdraw its players from upcoming events in Thailand. Momota, who was looking to make his international comeback, tested positive for the coronavirus at Narita Airport ahead of the Japan team’s departure to Bangkok.

The 26-year-old had was scheduled to compete in two Thailand Open series events from January 12 to 17 and January 19 to 24, along with the USD 1.5 million World Tour Finals from January 27 to 31 in Nonthaburi.

The two-time singles world champion was out of action following a car accident in Kuala Lumpur in January last year and sustained serious injuries soon after he won the Malaysia Masters tournament. His driver had died at the scene.

The Badminton Association of Thailand President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul said that the entire Japanese team had to withdraw from upcoming events as Momota had practiced with them just days ago in Tokyo. However, none of the other 22 players have tested positive for COVID-19.

“On behalf of the organizers, I deeply appreciate the decision of the Japanese team to have to withdraw from the competition over health concerns for other participants,” Patama said.

“I wish all members of the Japanese team strong health and safety and hope to see them back on courts the soon.”

The Badminton World Federation said the Thailand Open series and the World Tour Finals, already delayed by the pandemic, will proceed as planned.

The three BWF events in Thailand will be organized under bubble quarantine policy. Players are required to remain in restricted areas throughout their stay in Thailand.
