Persistent rain played spoilsport as day 4 of the third Test between the West Indies and England at Old Trafford, Manchester, was washed out, without a ball being bowled.

The visitors, at 10/2, are staring down the barrel, needing another 389 runs for an unlikely win. The washout will be a relief for the West Indies but they need to fight another 98 overs tomorrow, weather permitting, to save the three-match series, which is tied at 1-1 now.

England, meanwhile, would be looking to dictate terms early on day 5, and clinch the series after losing the first Test by four wickets, but winning the second by 113 runs.

Earlier, on day 3, paceman Stuart Broad took two wickets in successive overs in the final 30 minutes of the game, to put England in the driver's seat. The pacer is just a wicket shy of 500 Test scalps.

It was Broad who took all four remaining West Indian wickets in the first innings, in 22 balls, to skittle the tourists for 197. A combined 6/22 for the day moved Broad to 499 wickets in his enduring Test career.

England made 369 in their first innings and declared on 226/2 in their second.
