'We Kick Corona', a campaign set up by Bayern Munich’s German players Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich recently, received the support of fellow clubmate Robert Lewandowski, who donated one million euros to the cause. The campaign aims at helping those in health service and social workers to fight the spread of the coronavirus.

The Polish footballer and his wife Anna made the contribution to 'We Kick Corona', asking people to be responsible and follow the instructions of those who know best.

“Today we all play in a team. Let us be strong in this fight. If we can help someone, let’s do it,” Lewandowski said to German newspaper Bild.

'We Kick Corona' has so far raised more than 2.5 million euros.

Germany national football player Goretzka had posted about the campaign on his Twitter feed, thanking doctors, healthcare and social workers for “giving their all” in the situation. People can donate while charities and medical organisations can apply for funds from 'We Kick Corona' on the website www.wekickcorona.com.

“On the pitch we can beat anyone. But we can only beat corona together,” Goretzka wrote.

“As professional soccer players we have been leading healthy and professional lives. So we see an obligation to accept responsibility in these difficult times. Giving and helping each other is the order of the day at this time,” the 25-year-old footballer wrote. Goretzka and Kimmich have contributed a million euros between them.

Fellow German teammate Leroy Sane has also donated over 500,000 euros to the cause.
