Legendary Indian footballer and two-time Olympian P.K. Banerjee’s health condition has deteriorated and remains critical, his family has said. Banerjee has been on ventilator since March 2.

PTI reported that as per family sources, his condition is “very critical”. State sports minister Arup Biswas is said to have visited the 83-year-old ailing former India captain at the nursing home.

Banerjee was admitted to the Medica Superspecialty Hospital on February 6 after he complained of respiratory problems. He was suffering from pneumonia and also has a history of Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

He was put on ventilator earlier this month as his health condition continued to be critical. The hospital had given a statement then that the former footballer was under close supervision of their panel of specialists.

“The entire clinical team at Medica is putting its best effort towards recovery of Mr Banerjee. His family members are being updated on his health condition at regular intervals,” the hospital had said in its statement when Banerjee was put on ventilator.

Banerjee led India in the 1960 Rome Olympics where he scored the equaliser against France in a 1-1 draw.

In 2004, FIFA awarded Banerjee the Centennial Order of Merit.
