In a run reminiscent of what Diego Maradona did to score his 1986 ‘goal of the century’, Tottenham forward Son Heung-min ran two-third the length of the field, passing the entire Burnley defence, to score a goal making it 3-0 for his team on Saturday.

While Tottenham went on to beat Burnley 5-0, with two goals from Harry Kane, one from Lucas Moura, one from Moussa Sissoko, it was Son’s goal that has stood out from the match with many calling it the goal of the season.

Son, starting from the edge of the box, took 12 seconds with 12 touches to cross six Burnley players before shooting past the goalkeeper and scoring in the 32nd minute.

For context, Maradona's iconic run began from the half-time, albeit against a much better team.

Just a few days earlier, on December 2, the South Korean was named the Asian Player of the Year for the third time (he had won it earlier in 2015 and 2017).

In the 2018/19 season, he scored 12 goals, had six assists, and helped his team finish fourth in the league.

Son is the top Asian goalscorer in Premier League history and captain of the South Korean national team.

For Jose Mourinho, manager of Tottenham since November 20, the goal was reminiscent of the best efforts of Ronaldo Nazario, who played for Barcelona in 1996, saying his son now calls Son Son-aldo.

Football presenter Matt Le Tissier called it the goal of the century.
