Sri Lankan off-spinner Akila Dananjaya has been banned from bowling in international matches for a year after his bowling action was found to be illegal.

The International Cricket Council said that Dananjaya's bowling action was questioned during Sri Lanka's first Test against New Zealand at Galle in August and the off-spinner was subject to an independent assessment.

“As the latest report constitutes the player's second report within a two-year period, the first of which led to a suspension, he is automatically suspended from bowling in international cricket for a period of 12 months,” the ICC said in a statement.

The 25-year-old was previously suspended for suspect bowling action in December last year the first Test against England in November. However, he was allowed to resume bowling in February this year following “remedial work on his action”.

Dananjaya's action was reported again last month during the New Zealand series after another assessment. He was for a year following the second time his bowling action was reported.

The Sri Lankan off-spinner will be entitled to approach the ICC for a re-assessment of his bowling action after the expiry of this one-year period.
