Australia captain Tim Paine won the toss and chose to bowl first against England in the second Ashes Test match at Lord's on Thursday. The first day of the second Test was washed out due to persistent rain since early Wednesday morning.

England will look to level the series after their loss to Australia in the first Test at Edgbaston. Australia is ahead 1-0 with their 251-run win in Birmingham.

Steve Smith, who returned following a 12-month ban for his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa, hit centuries in both innings to help Australia register the thumping win. Needing 398 to win, England were all out for 146 on the last day.

James Anderson, who suffered a calf injury, has been ruled out of the Lord's Test.

In Anderson's absence, Jofra Archer will make his Test debut for England. Moeen Ali has been dropped and left-arm spinner Jack Leach has been brought in.

Holders Australia will be hoping to win their first away Ashes series in 18 years.
