Spanish club Barcelona announced on Friday that Argentine legend Lionel Messi will captain the side this season.

Messi has been Barcelona's all-time top goalscorer, with 552 goals. Messi is replacing Barcelona's incumbent captain Andres Iniesta and will have Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique as his deputies. Messi had been Barcelona's second captain since 2015.

Messi will lead Barcelona in its match in the Spanish SuperCup against Sevilla in Tangier, Morocco, on Sunday.

Messi, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, had a disappointing World Cup, scoring just one goal.

Iniesta, who had been Barcelona's captain since 2015, has moved to Japan's Vissel Kobe side.
