Social networking platforms Facebook and Instagram were down across the world on Wednesday and the situation continued on Thursday morning as several users complained about the problem on other platforms.

Following the outage, #FacebookDown and #InstagramDown were trending on Twitter.

Users who tried to log into Facebook complained that the page showed a message that said 'Facebook Will Be Back Soon'. “Facebook is down for required maintenance right now, but you should be able to get back on within a few minutes. In the meantime, read more about why you're seeing this message. Thanks for your patience as we improve the site,” the message read.

Facebook took to Twitter to acknowledge the problem and said that it is “working to resolve the issue”.

“We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible,” the tweet on Facebook's official Twitter handle read.

Instagram, too, posted on Twitter that their team would “resolve this ASAP”.

Apart from the tweet, Facebook hasn't given any statement as to why the social networking platform was down.

This comes a day after Google suffered global outage and users were unable to use Google services such as Gmail, Google Drive and Hangouts. Google issued a statement saying that it was investigating the issue after users complained that they were seeing error messages while trying to use the services.
