Heavy rain continued to lash parts of Kerala on Thursday, claiming 10 lives and causing widespread damage. Five of a family were killed after landslide struck Adimali in Idukki. Another five of a family was killed in landslide at Nilambur in Malappuram.

Three shutters of the Idamalayar dam in Ernakulam district were opened on Thursday morning. The rapid rise in water level forced the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) to prepone the opening of the shutters to 5 am from 8 am.

Authorities have urged those living along banks of Periyar River in Kerala to stay vigilant as the water level might rise around 11 am on Thursday.

A red alert was sounded on Wednesday and the KSDMA asked the public not to panic."The increase in water level downstream due to this limited discharge is estimated to be contained within the river banks," it said in a release.

The water level in the Idukki dam also increased after heavy rain lashed its catchment area. Power minister M.M. Mani had last week said the shutters of the Cheruthoni dam will be lifted for a trial run and there will be a limited release of water when the level hits 2,398 feet. However, sources said the KSEB has decided against conducting a trial run for now.

The water level in the Idukki reservoir touched 2398.40 feet Thursday morning. Its full capacity is 2,403 feet.
