Farmers in 621 villages in 13 districts of Madhya Pradesh, whose crops were destroyed in the hailstorm on Tuesday, will get a compensation of Rs 30,000 per hectare. Crops spread over 27,000 hectares of agriculture land were destroyed in the hailstorm. The worst affected districts were Bhopal, Vidisha, Sehore, Seoni, Balaghat, Dewas, Chhindwara, Hoshangabad and Betul.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has clarified that this compensation will be available to farmers who cultivated in the encroached land.

The chief minister conducted a high-level meeting at his residence on Wednesday and declared that teams of patwaris, gram sevaks, officials of the agriculture department and elected representatives should be constituted immediately for assessing the loss. He said survey reports should be displayed for people at panchayat offices and objections should be invited. If the objections are found valid, necessary amendments should be made, he added.

Chouhan said farmers would be compensated for the entire loss, using government funds and crop insurance payouts.

Earlier, the chief minister visited Piplani, Kishanganj, Baibodi, Itawa Khurd, Chichli, Borkhera and Jat Muhai areas and took stock of the loss. Addressing the farmers in Piplani and Jat Muhai, he assured them that the state government is with them. He further said survey of all the affected villages will be conducted and the assessment report will be displayed at the notice board of the panchayat offices to ensure transparency.

He also announced a slew of measures initiated by the state government to help the farmers who suffered the crop loss.
