The medical college hospital at Alappuzha is fast becoming a synonym for medical negligence with two cases of grave negligence being reported within 10 days.

In the first case, doctors who conducted a caesarean operation on a 21-year-old woman from Punnapra allegedly left a 3-meter-long cloth inside her womb. In the second incident, a woman died five days after giving birth in the hospital on Monday.

According to family sources, the negligent doctors had left the cloth inside the woman's abdomen after the surgery. Nine days after the surgery, the cloth came out when the woman went to the restroom. On seeing the cloth, she fainted and was admitted back to the hospital on Sunday evening. Her condition is reported to be stable.

There are also allegations that the hospital authorities are not divulging details about the patient. She is also not allowed to breastfeed her child, alleged her family members. The relatives have filed a complaint with Ambalappuzha police.

In another incident, a 36-year-old woman died on Monday, five days after giving birth in the hospital. Her relatives alleged that she died due to the negligence of hospital staff.

The victim, Jini, had delivered a baby last week and had breathing problems and stomach aches. She consulted the doctor again but she was first given medicines for gastroenteritis. When the pain didn't subside, she was instructed to go for an ECG.

However, she collapsed in the lab and died on Monday morning. Her relatives also alleged that they were informed about Jini's death only in the evening.

Medical college superintendent Dr R.V. Ramlal said he has sought an explanation from the head of the department and duty doctors and the case sheet has also been summoned.
