A senior Indian Army officer on Monday claimed the Chinese government had apologised for a recent incursion into Arunachal Pradesh.

Lieutenant General Abhay Krishna, G-O-C-in C, Eastern Command, said on Monday that some Chinese officials came to India to break the stalemate, which brought down the tension, and they then offered an unconditional apology.

“We had told them that this is the boundary and from here Indian land starts and beyond that you cannot go. We also told them we would have to take action otherwise. They later told us and said that the problem might be regarding some people at the base level. And in the end, they apologised to us,” said Krishna.

Official sources maintained that incident was reported on December 28, when local villagers spotted Chinese labourers, preparing the groundwork for road construction in a border village in Upper Siang district.

Krishna was interacting with reporters on the sidelines of the Indian Army day at Fort William, the headquarters of Eastern Command. The officer said that the Indian Army is fully prepared to break Chinese incursions into Arunachal Pradesh.

Asked whether India is prepared to foil any such future attempt by any neighbouring country, the commander of Eastern Command said, “Yes, we are ready. We will not let anybody breach the border. Befitting reply would be given.”
