The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed the Delhi Police to slap murder charges on the five men accused in the hit-and-drag case that resulted in the death of a 20-year-old woman on New Year. The ministry's instructions came after it received the report of a probe it had case, NDTV reported.

The gruesome incident which took place in outer Delhi's Kanjhawala had triggered massive public outrage. The victim's two-wheeler was hit by a car and her body dragged for around 10-12 kilometres from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala. Five men travelling in the car have been arrested, along with two of their accomplices. The men have so far been charged with "culpable homicide not amounting to murder", rash driving, and causing death by negligence.

The MHA has also directed the Delhi Police to suspend all the personnel posted at three PCR vans and two pickets on the night the woman was killed in the national capital. Officials said the MHA also directed the city police to serve show-cause notices to the supervisory officers of the PCR vans and police pickets. According to reports, the police personnel did not respond to multiple calls for help from eye-witnesses, and have been found guilty of negligence.

The city police has also been ordered to ensure that there is no let up in the investigation and submit fortnightly reports to the MHA.

The five men were drunk and had claimed they did not know the woman was stuck under the vehicle as they sped away after hitting her scooter. However, the prosecution told a Delhi court earlier this week that the men were aware that her body was trapped under the vehicle and they could see it.
