The BJP, in poll-bound Karnataka, is chanting the development mantra even as it is making an all-out effort to consolidate the SC, ST, OBC votes, besides the politically dominant Lingayat community votes.

Soon after Union Home Minister Amit Shah's whirlwind tour of Old Mysuru region, the Vokkaliga heartland, BJP national president J.P. Nadda embarked on a two-day tour of Tumakuru, Chitradurga and Davanagere starting January 5, in a bid to reach out to the various religious mutts, besides holding public rallies and caste conventions.

The BJP chief's visit to Madara Chennayya Mutt, Bhovi Gurupeetha, Valmiki Gurupeetha, Sri Kanaka Gurupeetha (Kuruba), Taralabalu mutt, Sri Siddaganga Mutt and Panchamasali Mutt gains significance as they are caste-specific monasteries that have immense clout among the community members. During the rally at Tumakuru, Nadda highlighted Bommai government's decision to enhance the reservation for SC and ST communities from 15 per cent to 17 per cent and 3 per cent to 7 per cent respectively. The visit to Lingayat mutts hinted at the BJP's desperate bid to pacify the various caste groups which are demanding enhanced quota in reservation.

While social engineering has been a strength of the BJP, the party has chosen to project the central schemes and Modi's leadership during the crucial polls.

Nadda asserted that the Modi government's various welfare schemes, including Garib Kalyan Yojana of distributing five kilo rice and one kilo dal to 80 crore poor people, housing and healthcare were meant to uplift the poor and deprived classes of the society.

"Modi ensured the mantra of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas'. This brought in a new political culture that also challenged dynastic rule, vanshvaad (family politics), caste politics and vote bank politics. Development means the BJP, progress means the BJP and destruction means the Congress," said Nadda while addressing party workers in Tumakuru. The BJP, in poll-bound Karnataka, is chanting the development mantra even as it is making an all-out effort to consolidate the SC, ST, the OBC votes, besides the politically dominant Lingayat community votes.
