Kerala-based journalist Siddique Kappan, who was lodged in a Uttar Pradesh jail after his arrest in October 2020 while he was on his way to Hathras in the state, where a Dalit woman had died after allegedly being raped, has been granted bail by the High Court on Friday in a money laundering case.

The Dalit woman had died at a Delhi hospital a fortnight after she was allegedly gang-raped on September 14, 2020. She was cremated in the middle of the night in her village.

The journalist has been booked by the Enforcement Directorate in a Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for allegedly getting money from a foreign country and using the same for acts against the interest of the country.

In September, the Supreme Court granted bail to Kappan in terror cases filed under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). However, he remained in prison in Lucknow, as he wasn't given bail in the case filed by the ED.

Kappan along with three others—Athikur Rehman, Alam and Masood—was arrested by the police in Mathura for allegedly having links with the Popular Front of India and being a part of a conspiracy to instigate violence.
