'Shown red cards to obstacles in eight years of tenure in North East:' PM Modi

While addressing the public meeting on the occasion of the golden jubilee of the North East Council in Meghalaya on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that his government had shown 'red card' to all obstacles in the way of the development of the North East region.

Ahead of the FIFA World Cup final in Qatar, Modi also said that the NDA "government has shown the red card to many obstacles that came in the way of development for the North East. 

Obstacles such as corruption, discrimination, violence and vote bank politics were removed, he added. 

Attempts were made to divide North East, but now we are removing these divisions, said Modi. 

While speaking at the event he also said that improved air connectivity provided to the region has helped the export of agricultural produce, benefiting farmers in turn.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated multiple projects in Shillong, including IIM Shillong at Umsawli. Four road projects across three states - Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh - and the Shillong-Diengpasoh Road also were inaugurated by Modi on Sunday. The Shillong-Diengpasoh Road is a mega project which will provide better connectivity to the new Shillong satellite township and decongest Shillong. 

The Prime Minister, who arrived here in the morning, earlier attended the golden jubilee celebrations of the NEC at the State Convention Centre, along with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several other union ministers. 

The North Eastern Council (NEC) is the nodal agency for the economic and social development of the North Eastern Region. It consists eight States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. The North Eastern Council was formally inaugurated on November 7, 1972. 

On the occasion, Modi also released 'Golden Footprints', commemorative volume of NEC's contribution towards the development of the northeat over the last 50 years. 

A short film on NEC's journey of 50 years was also screened on the occasion, an official statment said.
