With Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena giving a go-ahead, Delhi government is set to challenge the recent Supreme Court decision of acquitting three convicts accused in the Chhawla gangrape-murder case.

LG Saxena has approved the filing of a petition in the SC challenging its decision to acquit three convicts in the 2012 Chhawla rape-murder case who were awarded the death sentence, said an official on Monday.

The parents of the victim had met with the Governor requesting him to file the review petition. Recently the two of the three acquitted released from prison made the parents seek police protection.

According to reports, Saxena has also approved engaging Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to represent the Delhi government in the case.

"The LG has approved the filing of a review petition in the Supreme Court against its decision of acquitting the three accused," the official said.

The 19-year-old woman was abducted, raped and killed by three men in February 2012. The body in a gruesome state was found after three days of the incident.

The three were awarded the death sentence by a trial court which was upheld by the Delhi High Court for the gruesome rape and murder of a 19-year-old woman on February 9, 2012, at Chhawla, Dwarka, Delhi.

They had appealed against the sentence at the Supreme Court that in its judgment on November 7, 2022 set aside the trial court and High Court orders.

While acquitting the accused in the case, the SC noted that the prosecution failed to provide clear evidence against the accused.
