The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is conducting searches at 45 locations in Tamil Nadu in connection with the probe in the Coimbatore car blast case. NIA officials, along with the state police are conducting searches in Chennai, Coimbatore, Ramanathapuram and Madurai. The searches are conducted at the houses of relatives and supporters of the six accused who have been arrested in the car cylinder blast case.

In Coimbatore, NIA searches are under way at the residences of suspects in connection with the car blast case, in Kottaimedu, Ponvizha nagar, Ukkadam and Rathinapuri. In Chennai searches are conducted, at the properties of suspects and supporters related to the case in Pudupet, Mannadi and Perambur. Sources say that the searches are conducted to find out details about the transnational links in the case and the handlers of the Coimbatore car blast.

On October 23, a day before Diwali, an explosive-laden car driven by a radicalised Muslim youth, Jamesha Mubin, blasted in front of the Kottai Easwaran temple in Coimbatore. Reportedly, a cylinder inside the car blasted killing Mubin. The case was transferred to the NIA by the state government. The NIA also registered an FIR, two days after taking over the investigation and six suspects were detained under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

All the six accused in the case were produced before the magistrate at the NIA special court in Poonamallee and lodged at the Puzhal prison. All six were taken back to Coimbatore and locked up in the Coimbatore central prison. According to sources, the six accused—Mohammad Azharuddin, Ansar Khan, Firoz Ismail, Mohammad Shahnawaz Ismail, Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Thalka—were taken back to Coimbatore for security reasons. The case trial will happen at the NIA special court.
