A Kerala court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to Congress MLA Eldhose Kunnappilly in a case of rape and attempt to murder. The legislator, who has been absconding ever since the police filed an FIR in the case, was granted relief by the Thiruvananthapuram sessions court subject to various conditions.

Kerala police registered a case against the Perumbavoor MLA on October 11 on a complaint from a woman that he abducted her and sexually assaulted her. The MLA's personal assistant and a friend have also been booked over the incident that allegedly happened on September 14.

The woman later claimed that Kunnappilly had offered her Rs 30 lakh to settle the case registered against him.

While granting him advance bail, the court directed the MLA to submit his phone and passport and hand over the log-in details of his social media accounts to the investigation team. The court also banned him from leaving the state.

Meanwhile, the Congress said it has got an explanation from Kunnappilly through his lawyer.

"I will examine it and an appropriate decision would be taken after discussions with other party leaders of the state. We will not blindly believe the explanation he has given," Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief K. Sudhakaran said.
