Manipur govt to stop benefits for families with more than four children

The Manipur state cabinet which met on Friday approved the formation of Manipur State Population Commission and the cabinet has decided not to provide government benefits to families with more than four children as a population control measure.

The State cabinet meeting chaired by N.Biren Singh has agreed to establish the Commission through an ordinance. Talking to presspersons after the cabinet meeting, Minister S.Ranjan said that under the Commission, no government benefits would be provided to any member of a family with more than four children. 

The Manipur Assembly had earlier unanimously adopted a private member resolution moved by BJP legislator Khumukcham Joykisan to establish the population commission in State. Joykisan had said that the population growth of 153.3 per cent in Manipur's hill districts from 1971-2001 increased drastically to 250 per cent during 2001 to 2011, NDTV reported.

Earlier, a similar order was passed by Assam government aiming population control. The State bars any person with more than two children on or after January 1, 2021, from single or multiple partners, from government jobs, NDTV reported.
