Shrikant Tyagi, a politician who was filmed assaulting a woman in a residential complex in Gautam Buddha Nagar, has been arrested after a five-day hunt by the police.

More than 100 officers, including those of the special operations group, crime branch and surveillance cell had been tracking Tyagi since a video of him misbehaving with a woman went viral. The video also recorded him getting physical with the woman. At the root of the altercation lay a dispute over planting trees in the residential complex’s green patch. The woman had objected to it saying that it was a common area and Tyagi could not do his will to which he had let loose a volley of abuses.

Alok Kumar, police commissioner of GBN, said: “Twelve teams were constituted to nab the guilty. He even went out of the state in the interim”. He was nabbed in Meerut on Tuesday afternoon. The police had declared a bounty of Rs 25,000 on him.

Tyagi was in Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Hairdwar trying to escape the police. He kept changing both his location and vehicles to evade the cops.

In a press conference on Tuesday evening after the arrest, Kumar said that Tyagi had spent lakhs of rupees to get number plates, which read ‘001’, for his vehicles. Five cars have so far been recovered.

One of his cars also bore an entry pass to the Vidhan Sabha sticker bearing the name of Swami Prasad Maurya—a former BSP and BJP man who had joined the SP before the 2022 elections. While Tyagi has been charged under the Gangster Act, an inquiry has also been constituted into how he got himself a gunner for protection.

In his initial statement to the police, Tyagi has said that he is sorry for his misbehaviour and it was the result of a fit of anger.

He will be presented before a GBN court. Five of his associates have also been arrested.

The GBN police has also bulldozed some illegal construction carried out in the residential complex where the altercation took place.

Tyagi, self-declared ‘BJP worker’, has been booked under Section 354 (assault or use of criminal force on any woman), Section 447 (criminal trespass), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation).
