Gujarat: Wall collapse at salt factory kills 12, several feared trapped

Centre, state govt have announced financial assistance for kin of victims

 At least 12 people have been killed after a wall at a salt factory in Morbi district collapsed on Wednesday.

Reports said the incident happened at a factory in the Halvad GIDC area. The victims were reported to be labourers working at the Sagar Salt Factory. Reports said about 30 workers were believed to have been trapped under the debris.

Gujarat Labour and Employment Minister and local MLA Brijesh Merja told PTI efforts were on to rescue those trapped under the debris.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted about the tragedy. He wrote “The tragedy in Morbi caused by a wall collapse is heart-rending. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Local authorities are providing all possible assistance to the affected.”

The Prime Minister's Office tweeted “Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to the tragedy in Morbi. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.” Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced Rs 4 lakh as assistance for next of kin of the victims.
