A Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel was killed and another injured after militants opened fire at them at Kakapora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama on Monday.

Police said head constable Surinder Singh and SI Dev Raj sustained bullet injuries in the attack and were evacuated to a hospital at Kakapora. Singh later succumbed to his wounds while Dev Raj has been referred by doctors to SMHS Srinagar for specialised treatment.

A large contingent of security forces has reached the spot to look for clues about the culprits.

Of late, targeted attacks by militants have increased in Kashmir on security forces and migrant labourers. On April 13, militants shot dead Satish Kumar Singh, a Kashmiri Rajput, at Kulgam in south Kashmir. He was working as a driver for a private load carrier.

The killing sparked fear among the minorities in Kashmir.

Two CRPF men were targeted by militants on April 4 near Dar Building at Maisuma in Srinagar. One of them later succumbed to his injuries.

Over the past 24 days, seven migrant workers have been shot at and left injured in south Kashmir’s Pulwama. The attacks have triggered fear among migrant workers, forcing some of them to leave the Valley while many others have relocated to other parts of Kashmir.

Hundreds of migrant workers come to Kashmir for work in summers and return home in winters
