In a major security breach, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was attacked by a man during a public programme at his hometown Bakhtiyarpur near Patna on Sunday. The accused has been arrested by police.

The incident, which was caught on camera, took place when Nitish was about to pay his respects to the statue of Shilbhadra Yaji, a freedom fighter from the state, at a local hospital complex.

Video footage showed the man, in his late 20s or early 30s, walking up the dais and trying to land a blow on the chief minister's face. Clad in a T-shirt and trousers, the assailant was soon dragged off by the security personnel.

The identity of the attacker is not immediately known though the incident has sent shock waves across the state. Reports suggest he is a mentally unstable local resident.
