As the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls approach, the political rhetoric in the state is heating up.

At a press conference on Sunday, Samajwadi Party chief and former UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav alleged the phones of the leaders of his party were being tapped.

“All related to Samajwadi Party are under surveillance. [Chief Minister] Yogi Adityanath himself hears the recordings in the evening. If you [journalists] are contacting us, you are also under radar,” Akhilesh was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Akhilesh had called the press conference to respond to Income Tax Department raids on four key members of the Samajwadi Party who were close to him on Saturday. Akhilesh said the BJP was conducting the raids to save its government in the state.

Akhilesh declared the raids were an indication the BJP would lose the state elections. Akhilesh also referred to the use of the CBI and Enforcement Directorate to target opponents of the BJP.

The Indian Express reported Akhilesh said, “Till now, these agencies were used to remove governments in power, now they are using it to ensure SP doesn’t come to power.”

Targeting the chief minister, Akhilesh was quoted by The Indian Express as saying, “Yogiji should remember his government will soon be out of power. These tactics show you're convinced of your defeat... Your searches have proved that SP people will come to power.”
