A fast-track court in Gandhinagar on Wednesday awarded life imprisonment to a 26-year-old man for the rape and murder of a three-year-old girl. The convict, Vijay Thakor, will be behind the bars till he breaths his last.
The order was pronounced by additional district judge S.N. Solanki within just 25 days of the crime having been committed.
The court also considered the fact that Thakor had also raped two other girls and attempted to rape an elderly woman.
Minister of state for law Harsh Sanghvi lauded the efforts of police in solving the case. He also appreciated the efforts of the forensic team and doctors.
Sanghvi said the government will move the Gujarat High Court seeking death penalty for the convict.
Thakor is married and has a six-year-old daughter.
The Gandhinagar Police filed a 500-page chargesheet within eight days of Thakor’s arrest.
While presenting the case, special public prosecutor Sunil Pandya had demanded that the accused be given a harsh punishment so that it would set an example for such offenders.
CCTV footage of Thakor’s bike and other evidences were presented before the court. Pandya said the evidences proved that Thakor had raped the three girls.
Earlier, during the interrogation, Thakor had admitted of having murdered the three-year-old. He had also taken the police to the place where he had dumped the victim's body.
Last month, a court in Surat had given a fast-track judgment in a rape case.
