Amid the scare of Omicron variant, Karnataka made it mandatory for all international passengers arriving in the state to undergo RTPCR testing. They will also have to be in home quarantine for a week.

Passengers who test positive will be hospitalised. Those who are symptomatic, yet test negative will have to get themselves tested again on the fifth day, said Dr K. Sudhakar, minister of health and medical education.

As many as 2,500 international passengers come to Karnataka each day.

The state is taking precautionary measures, including ensuring adequate supply of medicines, beds and oxygen, to prevent the spread of the virus. “Considering our population and health infrastructure, we need to be more careful than other countries,”said Sudhakar.

“Forty-one lakh people in Karnataka are slated to get second dose of vaccine. Those who have not got vaccinated should voluntarily come forward, get the shots and stay safe.”

A release from the minister's office said CM Basavaraj Bommai will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to impose restrictions on travelers from countries at risk.
