A sessions court in Surat, on Thursday, sentenced a 39-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping a four-year-old girl.
The verdict is considered to be one of the fastest in the last 10 years.
Lauding the efforts of the police and the judiciary, Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi said the chargesheet was filed in just nine days and the judgment delivered in 21 days.
Hanuman aka Ajay Nishad, a native of Uttar Pradesh, was sentenced for life imprisonment and fined Rs 1 lakh.
Child of industrial labourers, the girl was raped by Nishad near Sachin GIDC, Surat on October 12.
The minister said the Gujarat government is committed to delivering fast justice.
In this particular case, hearings used to take place till midnight 12.
The trial lasted for only five days.
