On Thursday morning when there was a call to TP Chathram police station about a man’s body lying inside the water-logged Kilpauk cemetery, inspector Rajeshwari and her team of policemen rushed to the spot.

At 8.30am when they reached the spot, the man, identified as Udhayakumar, was seen lying unconscious and a tree had fallen near him. Rajeshwari was quick to respond. When everyone believed that the man was dead, Rajeshwari removed the heavy tree branches lying around him and checked his pulse. When she and her team noticed that the man had a faint pulse, she immediately lifted him and put him on her shoulders, shouting for an auto to get the man to a hospital.

The video of Rajeshwari carrying the man on her shoulders and walking, braving the gushing winds and heavy rains, went viral on Thursday. In the video, Rajeshwari is seen walking swiftly with the man on her shoulders, going to the police jeep, where the constable pulls out a dry shawl. She is then seen rushing to catch an auto with the man still on her shoulder. When an auto stops, she puts the man slowly into the auto and asks another man to accompany him to the hospital and save his life.

Udhayakumar, according to the police, works in the Kilpauk cemetery and was in the cemetery throughout the night even when it rained heavily. “He is 25 years old and lives with his mother nearby. There was water inside the cemetery where he was lying. It was raining heavily. There was water logging inside the cemetery,” say the police officers.

“No one has shoulders as strong as you Inspector Rajeshwari. Bravo. Helping out an unconscious man in terrible rains and rushing him to a nearby hospital in an auto indeed is laudable,” Supriya Sahu, principal secretary, environment, climate change and forests, government of Tamil Nadu, along with the viral video.
