West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will reach Goa on Thursday on a three-day visit to the state where Trinamool Congress has decided to contest the upcoming Assembly polls due in February 2022.

Though the party has not shared with media the detailed programme schedule of Banerjee, a TMC spokesperson said the chief minister will speak to intellectuals, thinkers and professionals.

Banerjee will reach Goa on Thursday evening and will leave the state on October 30 morning. This is her maiden visit to Goa as the chief minister.

The TMC plans to contest in all the 40 seats in Goa on its own, in what is seen as the party’s biggest foray into the national political theatre.

In the last Goa Assembly polls, the Congress won 17 seats and the BJP 13. The saffron party, however, stitched alliance with a few regional parties and formed government under Manohar Parrikar.

The TMC, which is in talks with several leaders and outfits in Goa, has recently got a shot in the arm with two popular faces— former CM Luizonho Faleiro and Prasad Goankar—joining the party. Several TMC leaders, including Babul Supriyo, Mahua Moitra and Saugata Roy, have already arrived in Goa to oversee party’s functioning ahead of the elections.

The Congress, however, slammed the TMC for its decision to contest Goa polls, saying this move will only help the BJP. Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala sought to remind the TMC that an election is not a "tourism" prospect to undertake once in five years.
