A day after Karnataka BJP president Nalin Kumar Kateel made a personal attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi by calling him a 'drug addict', his colleague and former chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa said he respects the Wayanad MP.

"No one should talk to each other like that,” Yediyurappa said.

The BJP veteran, however, took potshots at opposition leader Siddaramaiah and JD(S) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy over their remarks on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

"It is not good to talk about RSS in this manner and unnecessarily target the organisation. Siddaramaiah thinks he has achieved a lot but his statements are of no use. Voters know what is happening and who has performed," he said.

Kateel's controversial remarks on Rahul had come amid a war of words between the BJP and the opposition over an alleged derogatory tweet on Prime Minister Narendra Modi by the Congress Karnataka unit.

Addressing a party event on Tuesday, Kateel had said: “Who is Rahul Gandhi? He’s a drug peddler and a drug addict. I am not saying this, it was reported once. How will such people run a party?”

The Congress has demanded an apology from Kateel and asked the BJP leadership to sack him immediately.
