“The culprits will not be able to go scot free for very long,” Sandeep Khirwar, additional director general of police of Rohtak range in Haryana told The Week as the state police launched its investigation into the murder of Lakhbir Singh, who was found hanging with his wrist chopped off, on the Haryana-Delhi Singhu border on Friday morning.

Khirwar said the victim was a resident of Tarn Taran in Punjab. The Haryana police, which has been jostling with farmers protests for several months now, has the uphill task to identify the perpetrators of the gruesome crime.

“It’s a very unfortunate incident. But right now the matter is under investigation. We cannot comment on the role (of the Nihangs) and reasons for the murder,” he said.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has issued a statement saying a Nihang group is behind the killing and distanced itself from the group as well as the victim.

An FIR has been registered against unknown persons as of now but the Haryana police is in the process of identifying the suspects. “It is correct that the FIR is registered against unknown persons and we have not named anyone. But very soon we will catch the culprits,” Khirwar said .

Khirwar said they have certain leads but it will be premature to name any persons or attribute motives to them. “We hope to crack the case soon,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Union home ministry has sought a report on the incident and security agencies are keeping a close watch on the law and order situation. There are intelligence reports available with the home ministry of inimical elements who have infiltrated the farmers' protests and suspicious funding by certain criminal groups to create unrest.
