Hitting out at Kapil Sibal for his criticism of the Congress that there is no president in the party, senior party leader Mallikarjun Kharge said Sonia Gandhi is the party president.

He said Sibal's claim that the party does not have a president is a lie. "The party has no president' is a lie. There has been a tussle in the party many times, this isn't a new thing. Sonia Gandhi is the president of our party," news agency ANI quoted Kharge as saying.

Sibal had said there is no president in the party and they “don't know who is taking these decisions. We know and yet we don't know." In an apparent attack on the party leadership, he said there is no monopoly in the power structure of the party.

Party workers staged a protest against Sibal hours after his remark, saying they were "hurt" by his remarks.

Several party leaders too hit out at Sibal for what they said was questioning the leadership from which he had earlier "benefitted".
