Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen, who is passionate about animal conservation, especially conservation of Indian rhinos, on Thursday took to Twitter to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "standing up for the planets rhino species."

The former cricketer also wished if there are more world leaders doing the same as Modi.

“Thank you,  @narendramodi! A global leader standing up for the planets rhino species!  If only more leaders would do the same. And this is the reason why rhino numbers in India are rising exponentially! What a hero,” he said in a tweet.

Pietersen also retweeted a post by Modi in which the prime minister praised the Assam government for burning a stockpile of 2,479 horns of single-horned rhinos. "Commendable effort by Team Assam. The One-Horned Rhino is India’s pride and all steps will be taken for its well-being," the PM said in the tweet.

The prime minister was responding to a tweet by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in which the CM wrote, "Today is a historic day for Assam & India. We have taken an extraordinary step of burning stockpile of 2479 horns of single-horned Rhinos, first-of-its-kind globally in volume terms, pursuing vision of Hon PM Sri  @narendramodi of putting an end to poaching in Assam.

Horn of rhinos is a coveted item among poachers. There is also a myth that the horn of rhinos has miraculous medicinal properties.

The burning is part of an effort to curb poaching of the endangered one-horned Indian rhinoceros.
